Wear Your Heart On Your Sleeve

Edited have created a report surrounding the Spring 2019 handbag market. As a whole market, I can see it being dominant, encouraged by their strong presence in the mass market this year (SS18) which is expected to continue and flourish in SS19.

As much as I’m an avid shopper, handbags as an accessory have typically been the least of my priorities. I’ve always spent more on clothing, shoes and jewellery, normally only owning a couple of handbags at a time that I switch between. This is partly because I found the market boring in comparison- mostly associating the word ‘handbag’ with a Michael Kors or Jasper Conran shape and style.

However, I have been converted, after being exposed to the number of different styles on the market that can amplify style. This year, there are even a couple of bags I’ve seen that are on the Christmas wish list, which isn’t normally the case.

Predicted for Spring 2019, natural bags made of straw are expected to appear popular again. Bum bags also- which I’ve already seen infiltrated this season- which is a trend I can back for practicality as well as style, their an ideal design for gigs. I expect that that’s a key reason for their popularity- seen often at festivals.

Some trends appear to contrast each other, an example being that 70s neutral tones are an SS19 trend but also neon. Similarly, we will see a lot of micro-designed bags such as the bum bags or alternatively mini backpacks, however large oversized totes will be popular too, travelling over to London following their success in New York. The largely popular animal print trend will continue and be applicable to bags. In London specifically, ring handles and fastenings will be seen frequently also.

Above are a few personal favourites from the SS19 shows.
